My dad was always taking pictures when we were kids. It kind of gets into your psyche I guess. Having said that, my first camera was barely more than a roll of film in a pretty box; bought when I went to Canada, age 19. A good few years later, I bought an SLR and would take snaps on holiday and things a little more creative on business trips. After that I got into sport photography, in a very humble way; trying to capture the highlights of my younger sons’ rugby and football games. However, not until November ‘16, did I realise that I was into Street photography. I came back from a holiday in Portugal and I realised to what extent I felt the need to photograph people. Not family, per se, just people! Strangers.
I’ve always been fascinated by Social Psychology. I love body language, expressions. I was just drawn to Street. So... I got back from that holiday in November ‘16 and had to find an outlet. I’d taken hundreds of shots my family weren’t interested in. What the heck!? Who are they? So... I went online and posted in a Street Club. That Christmas I got a book on Garry Winogrand.
At the risk of sounding melodramatic, my world changed. I’ve made many friends, near and far. Learnt a phenomenal amount by looking at and analysing others’ photos. Developed a recognisable style and then largely abandoned it; for the sake of artistic growth.
I don’t know what my style is. I’m not sure I want to be categorised. I do know, however, that I love Street and the friends I have made.
