- Are you a professional photographer? No, freelance work only.
- Why street photography? I love walking on the street, a typical street walker but love the interesting people and characters, extraordinary scene and social moments and interactions. Only watching these daily life around me wouldn't good enough, time flies, to photograph in public would be so fascinating and enjoyable, it keeps me aware that we are living in the vivid world everyday! Tiny things and scene would become valuable, nobody would become somebody. To grasp the usual unusual, watch the complexity simple. Taking street photos teachs me to appreciate the matters we get used to.
- What do you look for in an image? Dramatic expression, posture and strong impact.
- Where in the world would you most like to photograph? At the moment, most of the street photos are taken in Hong Kong and Taiwan.
- Who would you most like to photograph? No specific, any interesting character with attractive and distinctive expression.
-Your favourite street image of your own to date and why? I remember I took the image on the sunset street in Yau Ma Tei, a street always crowded with grass-roots passersby in Kowloon side of Hong Kong. I spotted a man walking to me with head hanging down, little sunlight illuminated on his face with depressed and gloomy expression. I took the photo immediately without hesitation and I was surprised that he however didn't aware my exaggerated action (I must admit that it's really obvious). He walked away as if I didn't exist. I stunned at that time! What's happen to this guy? Problems on money? Worrying about the career? Lists of questions suddenly flushed into my head at that moment. This is the first photo give me such a strong feeling on the emotional connection between me and the character which I should cherish it in the following days of taking street photos.
- Your favourite piece of equipment? It depends. I take my handy Ricoh GRII in everyday hanging around . If the place of the city isn't very defensive to photographers, I will carry Sony A7M2 with zoom lens. I am also fond of Sony A7M2 with Voigtlander 35mm Nokton f1.2mm. Recently, Leica Q is one of my favourite gear to explore.
- Is photography art? Certainly yes. It's an art of action, an art of seeing, an art of immediate creation and reaction. Photo taking is not only a matter of shutter pressing. To press on the shutter is an art to deal with consciousness and unconsciousness.
- Black And White Or Colour? Most images are B&W, however I wouldn't resist taking color images!
- What are your thoughts on editing? Different camera brands have different color preferences and profiles, sometimes it's not what you really want. If the image is not over post processing, it's necessary. Back to the era of film, photographers also need to finish the masterpiece in darkroom by burning , dimming and sometimes cropping. I usually adjust the contrast and exposure as well as the color tone. For me, to maintain the authenticity of the image is crucial, it should be removed or added nothing to the image.
