Why is the girl held by the wrist? Is the father afraid that they will kidnap her? Is he the father?
It reminded me of when I was very young, in Tangiers. They kept close control over me, like this, for two days. In later years I learned that a friend of mine disappeared in the Tangiers market during this period. She was on her honeymoon.
Sorry if I dwell, but it really is an image that makes you think. Especially the questioning look of the child.

Scavengers
It is at the end of the day that the dump resembles a post-apocalyptic scenario. The atmosphere is heavy, almost palpable, interspersed with the living flames of the fires spewing toxic fumes that mix with the warm evening air. It is the time of the scavengers. Now there remain pieces of metal and glass that the fires manage to expose amidst the amalgam of burnt debris, the last hope at the end of another day at the dump.

MUNDAN... Mundan or shaving the head is one of the most prominent rituals observed in Hinduism after the death of the elderly family members. Though this ritual is fast disappearing in most Hindu communities, a few communities still hold on to this practice firmly till date. The reason why this is advocated after death is male members in the family shave their head as a mark of shedding their ego. When the elderly member is dead, the gap created by their absence might make them arrogant and mundan reminds them that they ought to exhibit their obedience giving off their egoistic tendency.

The two black and white images show us people on the either side of the window. Niklas’s is a wonderful, pulling you through the window to the two children looking out on the world. Shimi’s, on the other hand, seems to show the window’s separation of the children’s world.
In contrast, the colour choices are a step back from the people, beautiful images, full of story, made warm by the wonderful light. Delfim’s story is seen from the inside, Batsceba’s from the outside.

This week we have chosen four images. Perhaps they are not the most beautiful of all, but they are the ones that have given us some reflections.
In the first two we see two young women. One can still afford to dream ... the other already has a family. They are two beautiful images that tell us a country, a story.
The other two make us reflect upon the greatness of nature.
In the black and white one, you could read a photo that represents a simple touristic snapshot. But I think the photographer saw what I read looking at it: a metaphysical scene, where we have the man with his back to the falls, in full light. And the man who has his back to us, dressed in dark. What is striking is the freezing of the scene. The power of the falls compared to the smallness of men. Like a small defeated army or even a group of survivors of human stupidity.
The color image shows us a man waiting for the hurricane. The piece of paper on the ground is symbolic, like an announcement of something to come ...

Thank you Batsy...This image was taken in the Meatpacking area in New York City. There was a flower show and good size crowds, heavy traffic. A car made a turn and almost hit a women who tossed her phone and hit the car. Man in white shirt got out with women and all hell broke out for a minute or so...I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time, additionally my camera was in my hand with a fast shutter speed as that is my way of working..No one was hurt

I was intrigued as soon as I saw this image.
The protagonist so close, so immediate. You can’t help but wonder what the story is.
There are three characters evident, separated by distance, seemingly unrelated but the guy walking up the nearest set of steps may have been with the protagonist, moments before, who, goodbyes said perhaps, pulls his bag back onto his arm, train to await.
I love the mystery woven into this shot by the photographer’s ability to catch such moments.

This week we have street with a capital S. An extraordinary glimpse of life.
The girl is caught with a disapproving expression as she looks down on the skateboarder who drinks. The orange of her shirt is the same as that of the wheels and the notes of bright red in her bag and in his skate give brightness to the scene. The presence of the boy in the background who observes in the distance makes us come away from the photo with imaginary stories and also forces us to look down, where a group with masks is facing the staircase.

We don't know where it was taken. A woman observes a little girl who seems intent on observing nature, thoughtful, while two women chat with their eyes, on the sidelines.

Dipanjan Chakraborty, with this stunning image, tells us an ancient rite of Good Luck.
He told me that the name of this festival is - Gajon. It is a festival of the Hindu religion which occurs 13th April each year, to worship Lord Shiva.
Lots of devotees take part in a procession with fire, during which some parents lay their child in the road to take blessings from one of the devotees, who touches the child with their feet.
The children are also take part in this festival by dressing up as one of the many devotional characters.

Two powerful images that arouse a similar mood in the viewer. Both speak to us of the struggle against life, of the loneliness of the human being. Both with powerful black and white.
But the first with a more experimental language. A modern Don Quixote is defying a row of wind turbines with his umbrella. The light illuminates the last ones as if to predict a failure. Like in a scene from a Buñuel film.
The second is instead very classic, a perfect portrait. The woman scrutinizes her future, clinging to what life is granting her. There is perplexity in her attitude, but perhaps also determination and in a certain sense hope. As if defeat in the face of life was something irrelevant. Because in the end, we are alive.

The picture I’ve chosen this week is one I was drawn to time and time and again. Each time I saw something extra.
The picture is by Batsceba Hardy and shows an intimate discussion between two guys. But it’s so much more than that; they’re sat in a grandiose window; one on the sill, the other wrapped around upper frame, leaning out to talk around the structure of the wall. It’s a compelling story. It’s a beautiful connection.

When I saw this image I immediately thought about the image of Steve McCurry. LINK
McCurry's (colour) image aroused, like many of his images, complaints that he had photographed a request for help, coldly. But a documentary maker such as a war photographer has the task of photographing reality. Compassion has nothing to do with it, indeed, showing such scenes is a compassionate act. Nobody knows what happens after a shot, what happens inside the photographer's head.
This shot is less disturbing from an emotional point of view, but it still raises many questions: Who is it? Why is it happening? Is it a transgressive request?
An excellent image that shows how the street is the daughter of photojournalism.

A test crash dummy sits motionless at the wheel of a car, or is it a shrine? Many, many coins have been thrown in and are clearly visible on the passenger seat.
It’s not just the surreal nature of the shot, or the strong b/w that adds to the atmosphere. It’s the layers, the reflection. A woman on far side looks in, as does another on the near side, beautifully reflected. Both adding to the sense that the figure at the wheel is hemmed in, frozen in time.
This is a beautiful shot, complex and thought provoking.

Four significant looks.
In the first two, the protagonists don't seem to be looking at anything in particular, but they are at different stages of life’s journey. One is middle aged and has already seen too much and the other a child that has so much to see and smiles into the future. Two different black and white, two different stories. Two beautiful pictures.
In the other two, the protagonists look at the photographer. In the black and white shot the looks are curious, perplexed, smiling, almost defiant. In the colour one, however, his look is reminiscent of the woman’s in the first black and white. This time he sees you, but it seems otherwise. He looks right through you. Beautiful colours.
We are all caged by something in our lives, and maybe we are free only as children.

Two completely different photographs – In the first the black and white are contrasted, in the second the greys dominate, in the first the man is set apart from his surroundings and frozen, in the second we have a zac that enhances a movement of the clothes, but we are drawn to the stillness of the child's gaze – but both in the spirit of the street and both communicate a strong sense of isolation.

These two images complement each other.
It is as if the white legs of Takashi's background figure could belong to the man in the shadow of Gurhan's image. And the newspaper could be read in either photo.
Both shots are layered. Whilst Takashi's has more depth, Gurhan's takes place vertically, and both are theatrical and complex. Commuter humanity is represented as empty wrappers.

This week I want to offer you a photo with a story. I will not add more. Just the thought that this rich society of waste produces so much pain that is increasingly visible, even if hidden
“We approached Namdaemun Market from the subway station at City Hall - across from the old Joseon Palace, and several blocks away - yet always an interesting walk.
Normally, there are scads of tourists in this area - an easy walk to the palace in one direction, trendy Myeongdong not far away, and Namdaemun, also. Yet things have changed with the pandemic, and people in public are scarce. These days, it’s hard to imagine that Seoul has a larger population than New York City.
After a few quick blocks we walked along that main thoroughfare that passes Namdaemun Market, the Lotte Department Store across from Myeongdong and eventually leads to Gwanghwamun Gate - the north gate, and the largest of the original eight.
A lane that leads into the market area borders S.’s favorite pharmacy. For years, two women have been stationed at this modest intersection, selling traditional Korean packaged food items. I have passed them countless times over the past five years - always exchanging greetings, yet unsure if I really registered with them. On Monday, the two women were still in place, actors in a play that never ends. While I cannot speak much Korean, I understand many conversations - and one woman in particular spoke to S., and asked about me.
To be out and about with a camera, and in this case the Ricoh GR II - which intimidates no one, was so refreshing. I wondered if I had lost the knack for street photography. Naturally, S. and I made our way to the Lotte Department Store - which is Mecca for her. Since the cliental have panache, dress without regard for knock-off discounts and brandish respectable credit cards - there can be no possible worries about the pandemic. Yet the store was also lean on customers, and it almost felt like the staff outnumbered shoppers.
I can hardly stand to mill around a department store. It’s pure punishment. Luckily, the Lotte Department Store features a semi-enclosed seating area outside the main entrance with a pleasant view of the street. I camped there while S. made her rounds inside the store. I took a seat on a wooden bench area and noticed a crumpled up piece of clothing nearby. It looked odd - like someone’s abandoned coat or perhaps even a large book bag. I sat there no more than 10-minutes, when I decided to walk around. What a shock when I realized the item I regarded as some neglected clothing was a man so bent over that his head just disappeared altogether. It’s as if he had no spine. His exact condition was difficult to discern. Drunk? Passed out? Non compos mentis? He made no sound - accept for showing some signs of being alive. Women coming-and-going passed right by him - regarding the man as I did … a non-entity. A yet there he was in our midst, beaten by life - whether for the moment, the day - or considerably longer, it was impossible to say. I tried to document him from several angles - knowing that I was flirting with condemnation by Koreans and the #povertyporn crowd. Yet I could not resist, and finally felt satisfied with what I posted to P-S.”

This week I chose three images that created the same chilling feeling for me. That unrepeatable moment, which does not tell a story, however, but a feeling, a sensation. The frozen reality.
Even if in the last two images the subject seems to be looking at the photographer (in the black and white one, however, the gaze goes further anyway) there is no relationship between the protagonists and the photographers.
Reality is closed in a glass bubble. What reaches us is the theatricality of life.

This shot isn't just part of a great series, it's powerful, insightful. It's a moment many of us are familiar with. Family life, responsibilities and distractions.
The shot is more than beautiful light, composition and b/w. It's a shot taken discreetly, respectfully. Capturing mood in a special way, the way this photographer can. It's effective storytelling.
Sure, one frame can't tell the whole story but that's the beauty of Street.
Dad looks lost and the baby is apparently amusing itself. Mum isn't just distracted by the phone, it's almost a physical barrier the way it's held.
Roles could be reversed, that's not the point. It resonates for me.
I see a candle on the table. I see no flame.

When I chose, I didn't realize that all three photographers were part of the Gang. I always look at the photos and not the authors.
There are always so many photographs that I would like to reward. This time I chose three images that represent the street photography in three different ways, and pay attention, only three compared to a thousand others.
A beautiful landscape in black and white, a rainy day that conveys emotions, at the edge of the street. A perfect chiaroscuro, which unlike the usual ones is not closed on the protagonists, but tells a story of interactions. And finally a scene of everyday normality. Traffic in a city tunnel. But a girl is watching us and her eyes are asking what we're all wondering ... where are we going?

I thought a lot before choosing it, because it would be easy to accuse me of having chosen a 'mushy' image.
But this is a spontaneous image, not built for advertising ... it's a beautiful moment in this little girl's life. Her and her dog.

An image that is enhanced by the shining white that the photographer has caught. A white which reminds me of analog photographs.
A classic image, which tells a story for each of us. The concern in the eyes of the woman in the background, the lost gaze of the protagonist, the scarf and the glove, the gesture, the hair in the wind ... and the blurred woman in the foreground, whose mouth is caught almost waiting for who knows what. As in a French film, when people had feelings.
I am consoled to think that even today there are faces that know how to express and photographers who know how to see.

The second tells in a gesture, between light and shadow a love story of other times. It's also symbolic, in a different way.
The third image moves us into a fantastic hyperreality. The poster turns into a real woman. Once again a symbolic image.

This week I have chosen 4 images. The two in color are an excellent example of how color is sometimes fundamental in a scene, and the two in B / W show us how this choice can be decisive; in highlighting the drama or the concept that we want to express.
The first belongs to the 'category' juxta; but you know that for us it is not essential to imprison the photos in categories.
The second is extremely narrative; a cross-section of city life.
The third a really expressive candidate – it shows so clearly his joyous mood – with a beautiful shadow.
The fourth is a beautiful example of conceptual photography, where the human figure shows itself in its fragility ... and I like to think that it is observing the scene a bit like the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich
I chose two black and white images, a perfect black and white, which have the same oblique construction. Classical.
Both can tell a story, the first emotional, strong, the second an everyday story, tender, that snatches a smile from us. And this latter also shows us how the advertising, that surrounds us, has now become part of our lives

A symbolic image.
I don't know where it was taken, but I can imagine that it is a place of worship.
The photographer seems to be invisible – perhaps the shadow we see is his – but he observes and, like a radar, he sees the man passing under the clock and the hands, that seem to offer something, against the glass. Three hands forming a perfect triangulation, and in the centre a red carpet.
An image which could illustrate a surreal story. It makes me rethink a staging of the theatrical avant-garde of the seventies. Where the 'synchronicity' – much cited today – was normally used in art.
It becomes increasingly difficult to choose images.
This week I wanted to compare two images in which light and colour are used differently to show us something that we probably would not have seen without the intervention of photographers.

Heaven, earth and water. And we, fragile human beings
This week I chose two images of “pure” street, without any mental construction.
Obviously it's not true, because when the photographer shoots he has already built his story.
But I want to say that they are images of everyday life, simple, direct. Both tell the way of life in India, with the eyes of an inhabitant and a traveler, both journalists.
In the image of Michael I was struck by the similarity of the profiles between man and cow. In that of Debabrata the complicity between the two children.

It's not easy to choose, because the images you propose are always very beautiful and interesting.
This week I was struck by three 'candid' and I happened to see a photo posted some time ago, which I decided to combine with the others.
In all four the most striking thing is the use of light. In those of Abrar and Yoav, the face of the character is partially illuminated, in those of Gabi and Fran the light intelligently enhances what must strike us.
All – black and white and color – perfectly graduated.
The first is a romantic candid portrait that makes you feel at night and want to understand the young man's thoughts. – The second is definitely a conceptual candid, intelligent, based on colors but with a narrative force, because it makes you want to see the woman's face. – The third is definitely provocative, the smoke and the woman blurred, the profile so perfectly silhouetted In black. An image that tells the contemporary in a classic way. – The fourth is the most classic, referring to images of a photographic past that has formed us, which we know ... yet it is so contemporary. Man represents all of us, young and old, walking in this light that is bringing humanity to its destruction.

There is not much to say about this image.
You look at it and you feel yourself immersed in the mud ... inside the scene. You would like to move to not be invested.
Perfect color and composition.
Today I chose two essential images, where the composition and gestures dictate the turning of the eye, two different examples, but with a similar intensity, one in the pouring rain and one in full light, the black and white and the mood, enhance the contrast of these two splendid examples of street photography.
Two images that definitely have a story to tell.
In that one by Batsceba the title (Raining in My Heart) in a certain sense suggests a mood (amplifies the mood) and creates a connection between the two protagonists, while that by Pascal is more mysterious: are the protagonist two militaries?

I don't know if it's so true, sometimes I try to avoid it, to leave the intimacy of the moment.
But these three images struck me for the intensity of the looks of the three females: surprised, a little irritated, guilty, ironic.

A photograph that expresses clearly the difference between poverty and non-poverty. A strange thread joins the two invalids: the color of the creeping man's box and the woman's pants
Namdaemun Market in downtown Seoul is a world within worlds. The majority of my Seoul-based street photography occurs in this setting - because it offers a wide spectrum of the human condition, from inspiring hope-to-speechless heartbreak. This was not an easy scene to document - because the hand of fate could just as easily put us into the roles of the two cripples, and that is too disturbing to contemplate. An important allure of street photography is the ability to react to fast changing circumstances in public, impose a composition that rises above an arbitrary snapshot and offers the potential of a narrative with both insight and empathy regarding our connection with each other. The second is a studied image, let's say conceptual, the protagonist is the dog that looks in the car and the story is only imaginable, well framed and with perfect colors.

This week I made a particular choice, two images that struck me for the same reason: emotion & motion.
In the Fabio’s image the profound confidence between a dog and its human is represented.
In the Robert’s image a man is immobile in the chaos of life, invisible to everyone, as if he were questioning his cell phone: where am I going now?
In one the emotion is positive, in the second negative ... this is the life! But both images have a beautiful black and white and are perfectly composed!

The reference to the social cage is evident, the man is closed in his space and the advertising of the consumer society is evident.
But what is striking in this picture is the perfect use of light and color. The sharpness of the image, so beautiful as to make it seem bearable even to be caged in this world. Who knows, maybe there is always a breath of freedom in us

This week I selected a decidedly artistic image.
The choice of the photographer to eliminate the woman's face and therefore to focus his (us) attention on the man( in an absolutely surreal swimsuit) makes this image unique.
The desolate place made me think of a prison, but obviously it's impossible, and so my attention was captured.
Why is the woman moving away with an 'expression (we glimpse) indifferent? There is a relationship between the two?

This week I chose two images that have children as protagonists.
Photographing children from a 'technical' and 'sentimental' point of view is easy but from an ethical point of view and very difficult.
In a world where pedophilia is no longer even underground, but in the light of day, posting and taking pictures that portray children always asks us questions.
These two images represent simple, happy childhood, they tell a story without being mushy or dramatic, they are two beautiful street photographs.

This image is no different, and a stunner for facial expression and colour. Indeed a real smile inducer . The depth is perfect, isolated and frozen to draw you to the subject, yet those around still adding interest as they look on. Aperture and shutter speed perfect. The frozen hair tops off a real cracker!

This image was put in The Other side gallery, for its futuristic feeling story and mood. Indeed Blade Runner 2040 springs to mind, although the use of telephone boxes has well gone, the concept of collecting the reflections through such a tool, has been brilliantly done.
The old man with stick, subway reflection, colour and composition combined, has produced a real gallery piece. Well done Stephen

My initial thought was omg! Please do not distract this guy's attention Binit.
Then I asked, if it was an assault. Binit replied, that we both had seen too many mafia movies.
Indeed! But the fact this image screams a story of such magnitude, is just the point.
Wonderful menacing eye contact, locks you in. The depth of field pops out the scene. Superb street!
Very well done. Now I will just have a short back and buff!

Panning Splendour
This image by Angel Is my choice this week. A stand out from some amazing images throughout the week.
We all know Angel for his panning delights, but this image is a real stand out. Our artist has had timing perfection, and framing to give us foreground motion and interest. Superbly composed to draw the viewer through drama and onto the pretty cyclist, who appears to be lapping up the attention, and why not?
This shot actually went into our normal gallery for its impact, motion and composition. But really is a clever piece of art to end all panning wars.

Take a journey to the other side with this image
In Progressive Street, the galleries are full to the brim of astonishing images. I am starting to wish that I had never taken on the job of selecting the Photo of The Week. ‘Challenging’, is too small a word for the task but, with the job, comes the benefits of perusing the amazing art, and being lost in the eyes of others.
This week, I have chosen from our Gallery of Soul: The Other Side. This is a gallery that is well worth seeing for visionary and poetic imagery.
This well visualised image by Riza, catches your eye, as it does the little girl who is staring back at you. Although there is a lot of detail in the reflections, the viewer has an instant connection. The doll’s face appears to be subtlety glancing at the startled girl,whilst one drawn into this magical story.
Although not technically perfect, this image takes Picture of The Week for other worldly impact.

Indeed this young lady appears as a player in the spotlight.
The lighting has been used perfectly, to isolate the subject and her little playmate.
Sublime saturated colours have created a stage set with impact, whilst surrounded by extras busily ignorant of their part in this little masterpiece.
The additional players are just visible enough to add a wonderful street story.

Film Noir Impact
Chosen by myself for its mood and story. It is something we as moderators are constantly searching for. That quality image that talks to you. Indeed it may not be the story the artist had at the time of taking. This image was composed and taken. That was just the first part of the journey of this image. Then the photograph and art was created in fine processing.
The evocative atmosphere comes through and a story develops in our own minds. The connection is superb, his eyes piercing the smoke and locking into our very souls. Of course at the moment, a street photographer could easily be deterred by such intimidation.
Vehbi skillfully took a series of shots to get the best smokey scene. Got the shots, politely thanked his protagonist and moved on.
For me personally, this image evokes film noir, intrigue, espionage.
The lightest part of the image is the smoke which draws us in beautifully to the eyes of the protagonist. Then our senses begin to dance with the provocation created.
A sense of isolation prevails by cloaking which was a public area. Still just visible enough for us to wonder what part they play.
The black and white works perfectly for this story. No distractions from the quality that is.
Of course this image came out of a gallery of Up Close And Personal shots. This being a prime example of being perfect for a theme but alas, not the challenge criteria. Hence the word challenge.
Of course this is what was evoked in me personally. You may totally disagree with my presiding. That is art, but I get to choose 😉
