Two contrasting and beautiful images: a little girl who seems to wonder about life ... an elderly woman who lives her life without too many questions.

This image is our photo of the week by Mário Ferreira
This week I chose this image and I will use Keef Charles’s words that perfectly explain the reason for my choice.
“ This photo was taken in low light, on the move, it’s not crisp in detail but it sure makes up for it in power, emotion and impact.
Lovers, friends, neighbours or passing strangers with a passionate connection, it matters not. The passion is pure.
There’s no denying that this image has soul. It’s a beauty. ”

This image is our photo of the week by Robert Cressy
This week's photograph struck me for it's perfect composition and excellent black and white. A classic image that knows how to tell: the bewilderment of a man, in this society of well-being. In just a moment any one of us could find ourselves on such a road, with no prospect for tomorrow. A reflection on the value of human life.

An image in which the symmetry is enhanced by the colours.
A beautiful nocturnal. All these lights fascinate us, yet they are one of the causes of energy waste.

Two images to reflect on, that lead us to the other side.

This week we have chosen an image that can be interpreted in many ways ... it's a difficult time to smile, I know. Beautiful black and white and amazing connection with the trespasser’s eyes.
And an image that makes us think of a journey towards something unknown, an enigmatic future. The woman advances with her head bent and the man wears the white mask, but, in a sense, the light leaves us a little hope! Stunning black and white composition.

This image is our photo of the week
by Anat Shushan
This image, a real street photo, raises many questions.
Why is the girl held by the wrist? Is the father afraid that they will kidnap her? Is he the father?
It reminded me of when I was very young, in Tangiers. They kept close control over me, like this, for two days. In later years I learned that a friend of mine disappeared in the Tangiers market during this period. She was on her honeymoon.
Sorry if I dwell, but it really is an image that makes you think. Especially the questioning look of the child.
Beautiful composition and black and white.

An image perhaps not perfect, but with a great expressionist impact. The man of the contemporary age, seemingly tiny, carries his baggage between gigantic houses, which seem to crush him. And the light illuminates him, allowing us to better feel the story.

Probably someone will tell me that this is not a street photography image. But as we in the Gang often say, the concept of “street” is very broad. And deep down we are interested in the spirit. The story and the mood are so evident here.
A beautiful symbolic image. It's up to you to find your own interpretation.

An image that tells an everyday story and is perfect as composition, light and gritty b/w.
We can see the woman's expression and the two reflections show us both profiles, in a game of mirrors. And of hands.
One question remains: what the two protagonists are saying to each other.

Winter Greetings
BY EMILY DICKINSON
There's a certain Slant of light,
Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference –
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the Air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, 'tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –

Two images that compare two emblematic realities, one still closely linked to the past - two men immortalized in a break from their work - and one immersed in that future in which we are almost unconsciously already living (today on the radio I heard the latest news on the Ukraine and the possibility of cyber warfare).
I chose a beautiful black and white and a beautiful colour. And I leave you to reflect.
On the streets we always encounter something that makes us think. And when it is perfectly grasped, as in this case, we are amazed ...

How not to reward this image? I let the author describe It:
Scavengers
It is at the end of the day that the dump resembles a post-apocalyptic scenario. The atmosphere is heavy, almost palpable, interspersed with the living flames of the fires spewing toxic fumes that mix with the warm evening air. It is the time of the scavengers. Now there remain pieces of metal and glass that the fires manage to expose amidst the amalgam of burnt debris, the last hope at the end of another day at the dump.
João Coelho

This image is our photos of the week
by Kuntal Biswas
I let the author tell us his beautiful image:
MUNDAN... Mundan or shaving the head is one of the most prominent rituals observed in Hinduism after the death of the elderly family members. Though this ritual is fast disappearing in most Hindu communities, a few communities still hold on to this practice firmly till date. The reason why this is advocated after death is male members in the family shave their head as a mark of shedding their ego. When the elderly member is dead, the gap created by their absence might make them arrogant and mundan reminds them that they ought to exhibit their obedience giving off their egoistic tendency.

Four images, two of which are part of our #windows challenge, have the same subject: running figures, though the windows are treated in two very different ways.
All four, however, have a common denominator: they are 'conceptual' images that portray a reality by filling it with meaning.
Perhaps that of Gellings without the title loses some of its meaning: "Fifth Avenue NYC" but it is conceptual, nevertheless.

Delfim Correlo & Batsceba Hardy
Our photos of the Week today are drawn from the first 7 days of the #windows challenge.
The two black and white images show us people on the either side of the window. Niklas’s is a wonderful, pulling you through the window to the two children looking out on the world. Shimi’s, on the other hand, seems to show the window’s separation of the children’s world.
In contrast, the colour choices are a step back from the people, beautiful images, full of story, made warm by the wonderful light. Delfim’s story is seen from the inside, Batsceba’s from the outside.

These images are our photos of the week
by Ori Levi & Orna Naor,
Asdrúbal Rodriguez Muñoz & Miguel Angel Franco Dana
This week we have chosen four images. Perhaps they are not the most beautiful of all, but they are the ones that have given us some reflections.
In the first two we see two young women. One can still afford to dream ... the other already has a family. They are two beautiful images that tell us a country, a story.
The other two make us reflect upon the greatness of nature.
In the black and white one, you could read a photo that represents a simple touristic snapshot. But I think the photographer saw what I read looking at it: a metaphysical scene, where we have the man with his back to the falls, in full light. And the man who has his back to us, dressed in dark. What is striking is the freezing of the scene. The power of the falls compared to the smallness of men. Like a small defeated army or even a group of survivors of human stupidity.
The color image shows us a man waiting for the hurricane. The piece of paper on the ground is symbolic, like an announcement of something to come ...

Once again we offer you examples of significant black and white.
Images that know how to tell a story, speak of feelings, albeit in different ways.
There’s the encounter with a look that makes you a participant in a moment of intimacy; there’s hands clasped behind back as he walks the street; low and contrite looks; then a bottle in the hands of a guy with the weight of the world on his shoulders…
Four moments in unknown lives.

Two images that make me think of Italian cinema of the second half of the twentieth century.

This image is our photo of the week
by Jay Tanen
A true representation of modern day violence.
A quarrel born of a mistake, perhaps an accident averted, perhaps an inappropriate comment.
Maybe Jay can tell us the background.
But the additional violence of the females is really disturbing. It might appear funny, were it not reality.
Bravo Jay! Perfect reporter timing!
Thank you Batsy...This image was taken in the Meatpacking area in New York City. There was a flower show and good size crowds, heavy traffic. A car made a turn and almost hit a women who tossed her phone and hit the car. Man in white shirt got out with women and all hell broke out for a minute or so...I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time, additionally my camera was in my hand with a fast shutter speed as that is my way of working..No one was hurt

by Magda Fulger & Keef Charles
Petros Kotzabasis & সৌমিক সাহা
Two images tell us how the false world has now entered our life: in the beautiful image of Magda we see mannequins who have even stolen our facial expressions.
In Keef's image, we realize how advertisements are now part of our life. Imaginary and reality are increasingly confused
The other two images instead show us a tenderness that we have often forgotten. Two moments of real intimacy, with the loved one and with the nature that surrounds us.
Monday 05.17.21
This image is our photo of the week
by Batsceba Hardy
I was intrigued as soon as I saw this image.
The protagonist so close, so immediate. You can’t help but wonder what the story is.
There are three characters evident, separated by distance, seemingly unrelated but the guy walking up the nearest set of steps may have been with the protagonist, moments before, who, goodbyes said perhaps, pulls his bag back onto his arm, train to await.
I love the mystery woven into this shot by the photographer’s ability to catch such moments.
Keef Charles.

This image is our photo of the week
by Wendy Fischer Hartman
This week we have street with a capital S. An extraordinary glimpse of life.
The girl is caught with a disapproving expression as she looks down on the skateboarder who drinks. The orange of her shirt is the same as that of the wheels and the notes of bright red in her bag and in his skate give brightness to the scene. The presence of the boy in the background who observes in the distance makes us come away from the photo with imaginary stories and also forces us to look down, where a group with masks is facing the staircase.
The new reality, who wears the mask and who doesn't ...
An image that makes you think.
We don't know where it was taken. A woman observes a little girl who seems intent on observing nature, thoughtful, while two women chat with their eyes, on the sidelines.
We can imagine that the fate of the little girl in white is to turn into a woman in black ... or instead dream of a different story

Dipanjan Chakraborty
Dipanjan Chakraborty, with this stunning image, tells us an ancient rite of Good Luck.
He told me that the name of this festival is - Gajon. It is a festival of the Hindu religion which occurs 13th April each year, to worship Lord Shiva.
Lots of devotees take part in a procession with fire, during which some parents lay their child in the road to take blessings from one of the devotees, who touches the child with their feet.
The children are also take part in this festival by dressing up as one of the many devotional characters.

A surreal image, full of hope, in its weirdness. A man runs on a fake lawn, holding a skateboard, not chasing a kite.

This image is our photo of the week
by Pacho Coulchinsky
“It’s only when I looked closer that I realised that this was a beautiful, simple rural image. With magic. My first impression was of a shaft of light beamed down from a space ship. It has that science fiction feel to it. Whatever the story, it’s beautifully captured and told”. Keef Charles.
Pacho Coulchinsky is always very attentive to social issues, he often tells us simple stories, which communicate strong feelings. This time he amazes us with an image that at first sight – as Keef said when rewarding it – seems to come out of a science fiction story.
What else can I say, I love the blue of this story: it is as if hope was always there. Ready to help us

This image is our photo of the week
by Martin Ingber
Such a precise and fascinating image immediately raises a question. But knowing the photographer, the question is rhetorical ... In any case, to remove any doubt, Keef asked the question and Martin answered thus:
Candid, of course, Keef. My favorite thing about street shooting is discovering scenes that just deserve to be captured. I think I've shot my share of special moments; but I also feel like we miss more wonderful opportunities than we can possibly catch.

This image is our photo of the week
by Don Scott
A beautiful black and white for a mysterious image.
The perfect use of natural light increases the mystery of the story. In the foreground, there is cutlery waiting for someone and outside the window she looks in for someone. But she seems to see only a few people who are talking in a relaxed way. The heads of children can also be seen. Maybe a jealous wife? Perhaps a family about to reunite
Monday 02.22.21
These images are our photo of the week
by Fran Balseiro and Mateo Candia
Two powerful images that arouse a similar mood in the viewer. Both speak to us of the struggle against life, of the loneliness of the human being. Both with powerful black and white.
But the first with a more experimental language. A modern Don Quixote is defying a row of wind turbines with his umbrella. The light illuminates the last ones as if to predict a failure. Like in a scene from a Buñuel film.
The second is instead very classic, a perfect portrait. The woman scrutinizes her future, clinging to what life is granting her. There is perplexity in her attitude, but perhaps also determination and in a certain sense hope. As if defeat in the face of life was something irrelevant. Because in the end, we are alive.

This image is our photo of the week
by Batsceba Hardy
The picture I’ve chosen this week is one I was drawn to time and time and again. Each time I saw something extra.
The picture is by Batsceba Hardy and shows an intimate discussion between two guys. But it’s so much more than that; they’re sat in a grandiose window; one on the sill, the other wrapped around upper frame, leaning out to talk around the structure of the wall. It’s a compelling story. It’s a beautiful connection.
A moment in life both profound and profane.

A beautiful black and white for a surreal image, in which the interior and exterior are so well intertwined that they look like a new chapter of Alice Through The Looking Glass.

Look at them carefully and you will discover everything that is often not so easy to see
Monday 01.25.21
This image is our photo of the week by Roman Mordashev
When I saw this image I immediately thought about the image of Steve McCurry. LINK
McCurry's (colour) image aroused, like many of his images, complaints that he had photographed a request for help, coldly. But a documentary maker such as a war photographer has the task of photographing reality. Compassion has nothing to do with it, indeed, showing such scenes is a compassionate act. Nobody knows what happens after a shot, what happens inside the photographer's head.
This shot is less disturbing from an emotional point of view, but it still raises many questions: Who is it? Why is it happening? Is it a transgressive request?
An excellent image that shows how the street is the daughter of photojournalism.
Monday 01.18.21
This image is our photo of the week by Petros Kotzabasis
A horse breaks into the scene from the left, a child screams to the right and seems to want to stop it. A little girl who perhaps seeks shelter behind a tree ... and the ball, an object so unexpected, so symbolic.
A moment of everyday life that in this black and white takes on an allegorical value, turns into possible dreams, into the stories of our childhoods, talks to us about our archetypes and brings us back to life without algorithms

These images are our photo of the week
by Irina Escoffery and Rytis Vilnietis
This week we have two different black and white and two different stories. The two povs too are different, but both the pics are astounding. They immediately communicate a message about human beings. Hurry to go into the unknown, loneliness. We should reflect on what we build. We should slow down our times. We are only increasing our dissatisfaction. In the end, we all die...

This image is our photo of the week
by Petros Kotzabasis
A test crash dummy sits motionless at the wheel of a car, or is it a shrine? Many, many coins have been thrown in and are clearly visible on the passenger seat.
It’s not just the surreal nature of the shot, or the strong b/w that adds to the atmosphere. It’s the layers, the reflection. A woman on far side looks in, as does another on the near side, beautifully reflected. Both adding to the sense that the figure at the wheel is hemmed in, frozen in time.
This is a beautiful shot, complex and thought provoking.

These images are our photo of the week
by Niklas Lindskog & Carlos Díaz
Alan Roseman & Alberto Cavallari
Four significant looks.
In the first two, the protagonists don't seem to be looking at anything in particular, but they are at different stages of life’s journey. One is middle aged and has already seen too much and the other a child that has so much to see and smiles into the future. Two different black and white, two different stories. Two beautiful pictures.
In the other two, the protagonists look at the photographer. In the black and white shot the looks are curious, perplexed, smiling, almost defiant. In the colour one, however, his look is reminiscent of the woman’s in the first black and white. This time he sees you, but it seems otherwise. He looks right through you. Beautiful colours.
We are all caged by something in our lives, and maybe we are free only as children.

Two completely different photographs – In the first the black and white are contrasted, in the second the greys dominate, in the first the man is set apart from his surroundings and frozen, in the second we have a zac that enhances a movement of the clothes, but we are drawn to the stillness of the child's gaze – but both in the spirit of the street and both communicate a strong sense of isolation.

Joy and melancholy set against, the big abandoned plastic glass with its straw, the reflection which increases the feeling. The wait in the night.
So many strong elements together in this work perfectly composed.

These images are our photo of the week
by Takashi Tachi and Gurhan Gunes
These two images complement each other.
It is as if the white legs of Takashi's background figure could belong to the man in the shadow of Gurhan's image. And the newspaper could be read in either photo.
Both shots are layered. Whilst Takashi's has more depth, Gurhan's takes place vertically, and both are theatrical and complex. Commuter humanity is represented as empty wrappers.

This image makes you smell the sea, even if the observer is behind the glass. I really like the geometric play of reflections, the movement of the wind in their hair. The gesture. And the sky.
Clocks changing, move from summer into autumn. The blowing hair and mood encapsulate the change of season.
Beautiful black and white.

An image that struck us for the complicity that is perceived between the two protagonists, who appear to us as in a magic bubble, in a perfect chromatic palette.
The blond hair, hit by the light, and the woman's hand are in the centre, but immediately you grasp the various reflected layers and enter their magical world

This image belongs to our latest challenge: still life.
It is something that isn't accepted by all streeters, but that Progressives love. The observation of reality through the continuous traces left by the human being.
A picture that fires the imagination. Like something from the comic books stories.
It's surreal. A beautiful b/w with the power to tell stories.

A choice that is a punch in the stomach.
An image in which the use of light – and the drama – makes you think of a painting by Caravaggio.
An image that tells how life can be different, perhaps unfair, and how selfishness and indifference are the norm.
But it's useless ... we don't know how to give us explanations.

This image is our photo of the week
by Michael Kennedy
This week I want to offer you a photo with a story. I will not add more. Just the thought that this rich society of waste produces so much pain that is increasingly visible, even if hidden
“We approached Namdaemun Market from the subway station at City Hall - across from the old Joseon Palace, and several blocks away - yet always an interesting walk.
Normally, there are scads of tourists in this area - an easy walk to the palace in one direction, trendy Myeongdong not far away, and Namdaemun, also. Yet things have changed with the pandemic, and people in public are scarce. These days, it’s hard to imagine that Seoul has a larger population than New York City.
After a few quick blocks we walked along that main thoroughfare that passes Namdaemun Market, the Lotte Department Store across from Myeongdong and eventually leads to Gwanghwamun Gate - the north gate, and the largest of the original eight.
A lane that leads into the market area borders S.’s favorite pharmacy. For years, two women have been stationed at this modest intersection, selling traditional Korean packaged food items. I have passed them countless times over the past five years - always exchanging greetings, yet unsure if I really registered with them. On Monday, the two women were still in place, actors in a play that never ends. While I cannot speak much Korean, I understand many conversations - and one woman in particular spoke to S., and asked about me.
To be out and about with a camera, and in this case the Ricoh GR II - which intimidates no one, was so refreshing. I wondered if I had lost the knack for street photography. Naturally, S. and I made our way to the Lotte Department Store - which is Mecca for her. Since the cliental have panache, dress without regard for knock-off discounts and brandish respectable credit cards - there can be no possible worries about the pandemic. Yet the store was also lean on customers, and it almost felt like the staff outnumbered shoppers.
I can hardly stand to mill around a department store. It’s pure punishment. Luckily, the Lotte Department Store features a semi-enclosed seating area outside the main entrance with a pleasant view of the street. I camped there while S. made her rounds inside the store. I took a seat on a wooden bench area and noticed a crumpled up piece of clothing nearby. It looked odd - like someone’s abandoned coat or perhaps even a large book bag. I sat there no more than 10-minutes, when I decided to walk around. What a shock when I realized the item I regarded as some neglected clothing was a man so bent over that his head just disappeared altogether. It’s as if he had no spine. His exact condition was difficult to discern. Drunk? Passed out? Non compos mentis? He made no sound - accept for showing some signs of being alive. Women coming-and-going passed right by him - regarding the man as I did … a non-entity. A yet there he was in our midst, beaten by life - whether for the moment, the day - or considerably longer, it was impossible to say. I tried to document him from several angles - knowing that I was flirting with condemnation by Koreans and the #povertyporn crowd. Yet I could not resist, and finally felt satisfied with what I posted to P-S.”

This week I chose three images that created the same chilling feeling for me. That unrepeatable moment, which does not tell a story, however, but a feeling, a sensation. The frozen reality.
Even if in the last two images the subject seems to be looking at the photographer (in the black and white one, however, the gaze goes further anyway) there is no relationship between the protagonists and the photographers.
Reality is closed in a glass bubble. What reaches us is the theatricality of life.
Three images without smudging. Three images that remain impressed

This image is our photo of the week
by Batsceba Hardy
This shot isn't just part of a great series, it's powerful, insightful. It's a moment many of us are familiar with. Family life, responsibilities and distractions.
The shot is more than beautiful light, composition and b/w. It's a shot taken discreetly, respectfully. Capturing mood in a special way, the way this photographer can. It's effective storytelling.
Sure, one frame can't tell the whole story but that's the beauty of Street.
Dad looks lost and the baby is apparently amusing itself. Mum isn't just distracted by the phone, it's almost a physical barrier the way it's held.
Roles could be reversed, that's not the point. It resonates for me.
I see a candle on the table. I see no flame.

When I chose, I didn't realize that all three photographers were part of the Gang. I always look at the photos and not the authors.
There are always so many photographs that I would like to reward. This time I chose three images that represent the street photography in three different ways, and pay attention, only three compared to a thousand others.
A beautiful landscape in black and white, a rainy day that conveys emotions, at the edge of the street. A perfect chiaroscuro, which unlike the usual ones is not closed on the protagonists, but tells a story of interactions. And finally a scene of everyday normality. Traffic in a city tunnel. But a girl is watching us and her eyes are asking what we're all wondering ... where are we going?

This image is our photo of the week by Fabio Balestra
An image that makes me think of a world that no longer exists.
I thought a lot before choosing it, because it would be easy to accuse me of having chosen a 'mushy' image.
But this is a spontaneous image, not built for advertising ... it's a beautiful moment in this little girl's life. Her and her dog.
Monday 08.10.20
This image is our photos of the week by Keef Charles
An image that is enhanced by the shining white that the photographer has caught. A white which reminds me of analog photographs.
A classic image, which tells a story for each of us. The concern in the eyes of the woman in the background, the lost gaze of the protagonist, the scarf and the glove, the gesture, the hair in the wind ... and the blurred woman in the foreground, whose mouth is caught almost waiting for who knows what. As in a French film, when people had feelings.
I am consoled to think that even today there are faces that know how to express and photographers who know how to see.
Monday 08.03.20
This image is our photos of the week by Shimi Cohen
There is not much to add on such a significant image. We can only say that street photographers are often born journalists, like Shimi, who always throws himself with the same curiosity and willingness to understand and grasp the soul, whether he is in front of a ceremony, or he is witnessing a protest, or he is on a quiet day at the beach.
Strong pov and b/w…

These images are our photos of the week
by Marcelo Sznaidman, Lola Minister and Mónica Murillo
three images that seem so far apart, but which basically look with the same filter on the reality that surrounds us. The filter of poetry, of asking, of wanting to understand.
The first is the most social, the little girl observing the man is wondering, she sees the different from herself and wonders why. But the little girl is dressed in white and the image turns into symbolic.
The second tells in a gesture, between light and shadow a love story of other times. It's also symbolic, in a different way.
The third image moves us into a fantastic hyperreality. The poster turns into a real woman. Once again a symbolic image.

An image that takes us decisively to the other side. With light and negative space the author has managed to create a symbolic image: a bird in a cage hanging from who knows where and a shadow passing by.
Black and white makes everything more mysterious and dramatic. Probably in color this image would be surreal.
Two black and white images that tell us two uncomfortable stories.
In the woman's eyes you can read the fear of a lifetime.
In the attitude of man you can see a scene of the future, when humanity has definitively lost its human characteristics ...
Two disturbing images that tell our life today.

These photos, in one way or another, tell stories, and in me they created a common thread. In each one, in a different way I saw my sadness ...

Three images with a great impact
- the first says of the reality of life, wealth and surpluses against indigence
- the second says of the border of reality, when we can glimpse the border with the dream
- the third tells us about this moment of globalized society. And no words are needed.
All three are precise and colorful like the reality.
This week is the turn of three black and white images.
Each tells a story and each uses a different way to tell it.
The composition and the use of light in all three are perfect.
Three images that tell us differently about life.
The first is an intense candid.
The second a stupendous composition, dynamic in its immobility, The third shows us how life is, in its cheerful sadness ...
A different image, which communicates many things to us at this moment in the life of the humanity.
I like the use of light.
They are the objects of our daily life that begin to live, lighting up, while we are only shadows.
When the street becomes photojournalism, documenting what happens on our streets.
A dramatic moment expressed in a perfect b / w and truly well composed. Man's expression is a mixture of fear and hope.
“ I generally like to let the photo tell the story, but a few details I'll mention on this one: He's in serious pain and this was a 90+ F (32+C) degree hot summer day, and he had been laying on the hot pavement for at least twenty minutes because he couldn't be moved.” Robert Adams
These are special days.
Something has changed, humanity is facing a common enemy, without borders...
These three images perfectly represent our moment, when the reality is confused with unreality...
Dreams, nightmares, isolation... but creativity does not abandon hope: stay safe

“Hope” is the thing with feathers - (314)
BY EMILY DICKINSON
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
I chose a colour image and a b/w one.
In the first there is an explosion of life, in the second, normal everyday life.
Let's survive

These images are our photos of the week
by Joy Prakash Das Bruno Lavi
Noorhadi Saleh João Coelho
This week I have chosen 4 images. The two in color are an excellent example of how color is sometimes fundamental in a scene, and the two in B / W show us how this choice can be decisive; in highlighting the drama or the concept that we want to express.
The first belongs to the 'category' juxta; but you know that for us it is not essential to imprison the photos in categories.
The second is extremely narrative; a cross-section of city life.
The third a really expressive candidate – it shows so clearly his joyous mood – with a beautiful shadow.
The fourth is a beautiful example of conceptual photography, where the human figure shows itself in its fragility ... and I like to think that it is observing the scene a bit like the famous painting by Caspar David Friedrich
I chose two black and white images, a perfect black and white, which have the same oblique construction. Classical.
Both can tell a story, the first emotional, strong, the second an everyday story, tender, that snatches a smile from us. And this latter also shows us how the advertising, that surrounds us, has now become part of our lives

A triplet of very significant images, each one explores our reality differently!!!
This week we have chosen three different types of images, each one belonging to a 'category' of the street.
Actually, only for convenience, we distinguish them from each other, because the spirit is identical: document our reality, telling a story, or rather suggesting it.
Monday 02.10.20
These images are our photos of the week by Bruno Lavi
A symbolic image.
I don't know where it was taken, but I can imagine that it is a place of worship.
The photographer seems to be invisible – perhaps the shadow we see is his – but he observes and, like a radar, he sees the man passing under the clock and the hands, that seem to offer something, against the glass. Three hands forming a perfect triangulation, and in the centre a red carpet.
An image which could illustrate a surreal story. It makes me rethink a staging of the theatrical avant-garde of the seventies. Where the 'synchronicity' – much cited today – was normally used in art.
It becomes increasingly difficult to choose images.
This week I wanted to compare two images in which light and colour are used differently to show us something that we probably would not have seen without the intervention of photographers.

This week I chose a photo that tells us about everyday life.
A perfect composition to portray a gesture, an expression.

A single image this week.
An image full of meaning, intelligently cut and composed, with a perfect black and white.
Imagine, it makes you think. It makes you feel the love and effort.
Heaven, earth and water. And we, fragile human beings
This week I chose two images of “pure” street, without any mental construction.
Obviously it's not true, because when the photographer shoots he has already built his story.
But I want to say that they are images of everyday life, simple, direct. Both tell the way of life in India, with the eyes of an inhabitant and a traveler, both journalists.
In the image of Michael I was struck by the similarity of the profiles between man and cow. In that of Debabrata the complicity between the two children.
Strong colour and beautiful b/w! Enjoy!!!
Two images that tell two different stories.
In the color one, we enter the life of a woman who returns home at night. Could tell a story full of mystery or simply a daily story. But it is movement, intimacy, what makes you imagine ...
In the black-and-white one, we see a young girl full of life doing meditation in a cave on the beach, or pretending… She doesn't care about the photographer… I like the feeling of youth that gives us

The first, an almost conceptual one with beautiful colors, an unusual gesture, a surreal story.

In both the light is fundamental.

It's not easy to choose, because the images you propose are always very beautiful and interesting.
This week I was struck by three 'candid' and I happened to see a photo posted some time ago, which I decided to combine with the others.
In all four the most striking thing is the use of light. In those of Abrar and Yoav, the face of the character is partially illuminated, in those of Gabi and Fran the light intelligently enhances what must strike us.
All – black and white and color – perfectly graduated.
The first is a romantic candid portrait that makes you feel at night and want to understand the young man's thoughts. – The second is definitely a conceptual candid, intelligent, based on colors but with a narrative force, because it makes you want to see the woman's face. – The third is definitely provocative, the smoke and the woman blurred, the profile so perfectly silhouetted In black. An image that tells the contemporary in a classic way. – The fourth is the most classic, referring to images of a photographic past that has formed us, which we know ... yet it is so contemporary. Man represents all of us, young and old, walking in this light that is bringing humanity to its destruction.
Enjoy!

There is not much to say about this image.
You look at it and you feel yourself immersed in the mud ... inside the scene. You would like to move to not be invested.
Perfect color and composition.
Today I chose two essential images, where the composition and gestures dictate the turning of the eye, two different examples, but with a similar intensity, one in the pouring rain and one in full light, the black and white and the mood, enhance the contrast of these two splendid examples of street photography.
Two images that definitely have a story to tell.
In that one by Batsceba the title (Raining in My Heart) in a certain sense suggests a mood (amplifies the mood) and creates a connection between the two protagonists, while that by Pascal is more mysterious: are the protagonist two militaries?

In the street, it is said that eye contact is important: gives something extra to the photos.
I don't know if it's so true, sometimes I try to avoid it, to leave the intimacy of the moment.
But these three images struck me for the intensity of the looks of the three females: surprised, a little irritated, guilty, ironic.
Three images representing three spontaneous reactions and telling a little about the personality of these young “women”.

This image is our photo of the week by Michael Kennedy
A photograph that expresses clearly the difference between poverty and non-poverty. A strange thread joins the two invalids: the color of the creeping man's box and the woman's pants
Namdaemun Market in downtown Seoul is a world within worlds. The majority of my Seoul-based street photography occurs in this setting - because it offers a wide spectrum of the human condition, from inspiring hope-to-speechless heartbreak. This was not an easy scene to document - because the hand of fate could just as easily put us into the roles of the two cripples, and that is too disturbing to contemplate. An important allure of street photography is the ability to react to fast changing circumstances in public, impose a composition that rises above an arbitrary snapshot and offers the potential of a narrative with both insight and empathy regarding our connection with each other. Two black and white images, really well composed and both in a great B/W with a perfect timing.

The first is a classic street, with perfect timing and a wonderful composition. the story is clear, the communicative image with a beautiful black and white.
The second is a studied image, let's say conceptual, the protagonist is the dog that looks in the car and the story is only imaginable, well framed and with perfect colors.

A week in black and white and 4 images to make up for the absence of last Monday
I don't think it's necessary to add words, the images speak for themselves.
Enjoy!

These images are our photo of the week Fabio Balestra and Robert Bannister
This week I made a particular choice, two images that struck me for the same reason: emotion & motion.
In the Fabio’s image the profound confidence between a dog and its human is represented.
In the Robert’s image a man is immobile in the chaos of life, invisible to everyone, as if he were questioning his cell phone: where am I going now?
In one the emotion is positive, in the second negative ... this is the life! But both images have a beautiful black and white and are perfectly composed!
Enjoy

This image is our photo of the week Mikael Carlsson
Choosing the image of the week is becoming increasingly difficult. This time we chose an intimate image, a man intent on his work.
The reference to the social cage is evident, the man is closed in his space and the advertising of the consumer society is evident.
But what is striking in this picture is the perfect use of light and color. The sharpness of the image, so beautiful as to make it seem bearable even to be caged in this world. Who knows, maybe there is always a breath of freedom in us

This image is our photo of the week by Roland Groebe
This week I selected a decidedly artistic image.
The choice of the photographer to eliminate the woman's face and therefore to focus his (us) attention on the man( in an absolutely surreal swimsuit) makes this image unique.
The desolate place made me think of a prison, but obviously it's impossible, and so my attention was captured.
Why is the woman moving away with an 'expression (we glimpse) indifferent? There is a relationship between the two?
Thanks, Roland for this wonderful shot that allows us to imagine an infinity of stories.
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
This week I chose two images that have children as protagonists.
Photographing children from a 'technical' and 'sentimental' point of view is easy but from an ethical point of view and very difficult.
In a world where pedophilia is no longer even underground, but in the light of day, posting and taking pictures that portray children always asks us questions.
These two images represent simple, happy childhood, they tell a story without being mushy or dramatic, they are two beautiful street photographs.
Well done Bogo Pečnikar and Joel Ron

Two images that can tell a story, one recreating a perfect atmosphere, the other through small details!
A woman sheltering from the sun in a dark alley and a blurred jogging man into a red evening of fog and rain

This image is our photo of the week by Roberto Di Patrizi
A beautiful black and white to emphasize now that is so familiar: discouragement on the face of a mother!
Perfect timing! really an image of everyday life. We hope that the smile back to both the mother and child

This image is our photo of the week by Romeo Doneza
A photo that does not go unnoticed: the character who scrutinizes you from the top down, we can imagine the photographer kneeling at his feet. The perfect sky and the two heads at both ends.
A small masterpiece!
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

This image is our photo of the week by Michael Kennedy
this picture is simply awesome!
It looks like the frame of a film. The scene is perfectly studied: everything is perfectly neat, even the woman's toes on the right (as Bogo pointed out).
The sweet story, the beautiful colors (beautiful shades of blue and orange), the glowing light, all this makes this photo an unforgettable photo!
Outstanding work Michael!

by Sumit Goel Bruno Lavi Mike Heard Karak Apok
I think it is useless to explain the reasons why we chose these 4 images, one different from the other, but all very significant.
The composition of each is perfect, even the process ... but above all what every picture tells us is amazing!
Strong street stories!
Well done guys

This image is our photo of the week by Theodoros Topalis
The photo of this week is a very simple photo, a picture out of time, it seems to have escaped from an illustrated children's book.
Even the smoking chimney is telling us something.
Where will she be running with her baggage? Towards the market where she will sell her products ... but maybe towards a new life ...
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

This images is our photo of the week by Francesco Nigi
This week is St. Valentine's Day and we have chosen an image that speaks of love but in a unconventional way.
This story leaves us with a little bitter taste ... or maybe not.
A perfectly colored metropolitan “painting”.
Well done Francesco Nigi!
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§
Two images of a stolen childhood, taken by the same photographer.
The first represents a dramatic moment, the unhappiness but also the solidarity between two little brothers who run towards someone or run away from someone or something. The gritty black and white renders perfectly the scene and also the composition, all shifted to the right, does it, as if they could come out of the frame ...
The second image is softly ironic and in color, but even here the colors are muted as if the reality of the little monk was enveloped by the smoke of his own cigarette. An attempt to escape the rules to which he was subjected without being able to choose
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

“"To be honest, when I see this legless man crawling through the crowds, I am frightened and appalled and disgusted because this could happen to any of us, and a sense of helplessness about what to do for the wretched of the Earth makes me want to avert my eyes. Yet - when I do photograph him … as I’ve done at least three or four times over the years, I’m not drawn to him … he’s but an actor, and the callous people all around him is what affects me."

This image is our photo of the week by Melo Melo
The intensity of this shot brings to memory an unforgettable photograph.
Someone could say: on the edge of the Photojournalism….
Photojournalism main Characteristics : Timeliness Objectivity Narrative
Street main Characteristics: Decisive moment Candid Narrative
Documentary is concerned about the sequence
Street about the instant
It's all a blah blah.
I think that wanting to enclose each of our shots in a category is silly: humanity always needs fences.
For me, if there is a difference, it's just the spirit with which you shoot.
In conclusion we could close ourselves in a category, but not our shots.
Well seen Melo Melo!

These images are our photo of the week by Ilan Ben Yehuda,

The normality of life: a day on the beach, seen however with the inquisitive and ironic eye of a very good photographer.
A lesson in composition and how to create a sensational story from scratch.

A beautiful interaction. As if he were trying to understand the young man's thoughts to console him.
A photo that could only be in black and white.
Light and composition are perfect.
It is really an existential photography ...

This image is our photo of the week by Alan Jacobs
We chose this mysterious and magical image to wish everyone Happy New Year!
The composition is perfect: the vertical sign (that we only see by the coast) illuminates the scene, the writing that deludes us of being all heroes, and the human presence as in a dream ...
Beautiful colors to start a New Year!
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

A simple image, even in the colors, but full of meanings: the writing, the gesture of the woman, the position of the man.
The real life: a story that we can tell.
Well done!

These images are our photo of the week
by Teruma Aoto Rainer Neuman Jeff Stephens
this week, we decided to highlight three black and white photos with different characteristics, but all very special.
Teruma Aoto pic is a beautiful example of a not straight, but deliberately inclined image that increases the sense of the image, adding a kind of movement: the girl seems to be going faster ... an escape. strong story and nice reflection.
Rainer Neumann pic is a beautiful and classic story. Excellent point of view and composition and focus.
Jeff Stephens pic is a simple story, with a beautiful contrast and a perfect triangulation: a man in the foreground, one in the middle, and one in the background. The gaze of the first is focused on something we will never see.
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

This image is our photo of the week by Dov Oron

A beautiful black and white and an excellent composition, emphasize the concentration of the young reader.
Well done Dov Oron!
Fabio Balestra

This image is our photo of the week by Kyi Tha
This photo of the week is like a gut punch, but also a hope: it represents the two aspects of the humanity. Well done Kyi Tha!
An image that is striking for the story it tells: an older child is looking at a jounal, and he is distracted to look at the little brother (it is my guess) who is holding a toy gun and shooting an imaginary enemy.
It is almost a look of commiseration, as if the boy had the conscience that the little brother does not know what he is imitating, a gesture that brings death and pain ...
Strong image that makes you think, well composed and processed.
§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§§

This image is our photo of the week by Sagi Kortler
A masterpiece of contrasting situations.
The juxtaposition between the dummy (which represents the type of aggressive woman the advertising wants to impose on us) and the man who has lost his place in society is perfect.
The figure that passes and looks at the scene in the background is a gem as well as your hand with your camera.
Terrific street! Well done Sagi

I do not think it is necessary to say something about this image.
It's a perfect photographic portrait.

Terrific Michel!

This image is our photo of the week by Tony Liviero
An image that rips a smile and makes you think of happy moments.
The simplicity of the expressions strikes and obviously the same clothes of the two young women raise some questions: are they twins? is it a work uniform?
The clouds that dot the sky, the foam of the sea and the wind create a nice atmosphere, helped by a perfect black and white.
Terrific!

This image is our photo of the week by Tam Padullon
A mysterious image, with a beautiful mono.

A shot different from the others, which remains in the memory.
Well done Tam Padullon

This image is our photo of the week by Ugo Garzia
The first thing that struck the observer about this image is the colors, beautiful shades of brown and the cold light of advertising.
The connection Garzia has established between himself, the man and the woman in the poster are really great! They are both amazed and seem to wonder: what is happening? why are you looking at me?
The quality of the image, the tones and connection. Perfect timing and composition: really good stuff, Ugo!

This image is our photo of the week by Larry L Abellera
The photo of the week by Larry L Abellera has been chosen for the raw emotion that has been captured and conveyed.
If there was a series of these images as the scene developed, it would indeed be photojournalism.
One can feel the mood and tension.
Getting a quality image in that sort of atmosphere is no mean feat.
The depth and composition are superb, processed tastefully to a retro feeling bw, focusing the viewers' attention to all the right places.
This image would not look out of place on the front of the latest Rolling Stone magazine, maybe even our own Progressive Street magazine, and why not?
At the end of the day this is a split second moment in time.
Fantastic, evocative and emotional street photography. Very well done!
Robert Bannister

This image is our photo of the week by Harrie Miller
A moment in time recorded with perfect antipodean, direction of light.
One may ask what era this moment was?
A man in a suit beside an old London Cab, maybe the take away coffee cup gives it away. But it really does not matter.
The quality, connection and composition, fuelled with perfect light direction, explodes this image into our galleries and the photo of the week.
The tasteful processing to mono has enhanced the retro and classic feel. The clarity and crispness tops off a real delight.
If you look up moment and record in a thesaurus, moment denotes a split second. Record denotes a story.
Thank you Harrie, for this quality split second story

This is the photo of the week, by the artist Gerd Bonse. Gerd consistently produces images with a sense of irony and satire.
This image is no different, and a stunner for facial expression and colour. Indeed a real smile inducer . Photo of The Week is by the artist Stephen Oxberry.
This image was put in The Other side gallery, for its futuristic feeling story and mood. Indeed Blade Runner 2040 springs to mind, although the use of telephone boxes has well gone, the concept of collecting the reflections through such a tool, has been brilliantly done.
The old man with stick, subway reflection, colour and composition combined, has produced a real gallery piece. Well done Stephen

This image is our photo of the week by Mike Heard
Window
Our photo of the week, this week, is by the artist Mike Heard.
Beautifully composed and processed into warm, saturated colours.
The main subject is perfectly lit and isolated in the frame. The subtle reflections enhancing, rather than subtracting, from an outstanding image. Very well done Mike Heard.
This piece is also very apt, as he is obviously downloading Progressive Street's inaugural E-zine magazine, which is here for you to download too. Why not? You are here anyway

Classic Street
This is the photo of the week. As classic as street photography gets. This superb composition and juxta, adds a wry smile to all who look.
Being mono, has added the quintessential icing to the classic cake.
Very well done and seen, John Jobling.

Dervishe Dance
Indeed a very late entry to the week, but this image takes the biscuit. It was the last one in the tin, but oh so tasty! We all need that bit of kismet to produce great images. Saman A. Ali, although wonderfully composed with perfect depth, has had his. The heavens have been kind, adding drama, breeze and dynamics. This convocation of dogmatists with superb back lighting pops out a real folktale. Well done Saman A. Ali

This image is our photo of the week by Norman Orly
Undecided
Norman, is consistently producing and posting this sort of high quality image.
This image because of ìt's stunning depth of field, has isolated the subject superbly and popped her out of a world of chaos.
The timing has been perfect to capture that human emotion and psyche.
A moment of brilliance. Well done Norman Orly.

Panning Splendour
This image by Angel Is my choice this week. A stand out from some amazing images throughout the week.
We all know Angel for his panning delights, but this image is a real stand out. Our artist has had timing perfection, and framing to give us foreground motion and interest. Superbly composed to draw the viewer through drama and onto the pretty cyclist, who appears to be lapping up the attention, and why not?
This shot actually went into our normal gallery for its impact, motion and composition. But really is a clever piece of art to end all panning wars.
Well done Angel Rodriguez the master! Well this week anyway

Take a journey to the other side with this image
In Progressive Street, the galleries are full to the brim of astonishing images. I am starting to wish that I had never taken on the job of selecting the Photo of The Week. ‘Challenging’, is too small a word for the task but, with the job, comes the benefits of perusing the amazing art, and being lost in the eyes of others.
This week, I have chosen from our Gallery of Soul: The Other Side. This is a gallery that is well worth seeing for visionary and poetic imagery.
This well visualised image by Riza, catches your eye, as it does the little girl who is staring back at you. Although there is a lot of detail in the reflections, the viewer has an instant connection. The doll’s face appears to be subtlety glancing at the startled girl, whilst one drawn into this magical story.
Although not technically perfect, this image takes Picture of The Week for other worldly impact.
Please see the article by Patrick Monnier on the technical aspects and emotional side of street photography.

All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players........
Indeed this young lady appears as a player in the spotlight.
The lighting has been used perfectly, to isolate the subject and her little playmate.
Sublime saturated colours have created a stage set with impact, whilst surrounded by extras busily ignorant of their part in this little masterpiece.
The additional players are just visible enough to add a wonderful street story.

This image is our first photo of the week by Vehbi Dileksiz.
Film Noir Impact
Chosen by myself for its mood and story. It is something we as moderators are constantly searching for. That quality image that talks to you. Indeed it may not be the story the artist had at the time of taking. This image was composed and taken. That was just the first part of the journey of this image. Then the photograph and art was created in fine processing.
The evocative atmosphere comes through and a story develops in our own minds. The connection is superb, his eyes piercing the smoke and locking into our very souls. Of course at the moment, a street photographer could easily be deterred by such intimidation.
Vehbi skillfully took a series of shots to get the best smokey scene. Got the shots, politely thanked his protagonist and moved on.
For me personally, this image evokes film noir, intrigue, espionage.
The lightest part of the image is the smoke which draws us in beautifully to the eyes of the protagonist. Then our senses begin to dance with the provocation created.
A sense of isolation prevails by cloaking which was a public area. Still just visible enough for us to wonder what part they play.
The black and white works perfectly for this story. No distractions from the quality that is.
Of course this image came out of a gallery of Up Close And Personal shots. This being a prime example of being perfect for a theme but alas, not the challenge criteria. Hence the word challenge.
Of course this is what was evoked in me personally. You may totally disagree with my presiding. That is art, but I get to choose 😉
So thank you Vehbi Dileksiz for being our first photo of the week.
Enjoy everybody, and please take the time to look around the site at the articles and inspiring work.
