It’s difficult to say to what extent our lives will be changed by this pandemic. It’s hard to predict when we can finally relax and count the cost.

What we do know, however, is that many people pulled together to get through it.

We recognised that here at Progressive, we had a part to play in helping people; to express their hopes and fears. Our Challenge drew an incredible response and a real mix of shots and raw emotion gave us an insight into what people were collectively going through.

More than that though, we wanted to do something more lasting. We drew together articles and images to bear witness to this unique time in our lives.

Understanding life through photography Street photography is my way of telling people to pay attention; pay attention to the beauty and magic of everyday moments that happen all the time, all around us. Unfortu- nately, most people are too absorbed in themselves, or too absorbed in the little screens of their phones, to actually open their eyes and look around. The message I want to convey through street photography is this: open your eyes — be interested in the world, not in yourself. - Dimitri Mellos

I love street photography Another reason I love street photography is because it doesn’t require sophisticated and heavy equipment, and you can do it anywhere. I have also discovered that as a woman, I have an added advantage and power as a street photographer, because my invisibility enables me to get very close to subjects and work a scene without being noticed. - Julia Coddington

The Story Initially, I used my cellphone for street photography, yet soon switched to a DSLR because I wanted to be serious. This switch in approach allowed me to better respond to the expressions of people on the street: from joyous happiness to overwhelm- ing sadness. Every moment offers a potential story — if we remain open to the possibilities. - Abrar Asad

Shades of Glasgow It was during my trips to London that I developed an interest in street photography. My Scottish-born landscape style adapted to suit London’s modern architecture, bustling, expensive streets and attractive, exotic faces. Humorous advertisement juxtapositions and coffee shop window clichés abounded in my attempts to record the slick, fast-moving world around me. Everything is fine in that affluent world; not so in Glasgow. Of course, Glasgow has its large international stores like every Western city. And Glaswegians stare out of Starbucks’ windows just as Londoners, Parisians and New Yorkers do. - David Goold

Dimitri Mellos was born in Athens, Greece, but since 2005 has been living in New York City. He is a self-taught photographer who works mainly on long- term, self-initiated projects. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally and has garnered several prestigious awards and accolades, including being a Finalist for the Magnum Expression Award and the Visura Grant, and a Juror’s Pick at the Lensculture Magnum Photography Awards. In 2019, he was featured in the book Masters of Street Photography (UK, Ammonite Press).

Julia Coddington is an internationally recognised street photographer from Australia. Co-founder of the Unexposed Collective (with Rebecca Wiltshire), an online platform featuring Australian women and non-binary street photographers. She is also an administrator of @womeninstreet, a growing international community of women street photographers.

Abrar Asad (30 running, unmarried, MBA running) works at Ericsson's project Under 20cube logistics Ltd, a telecommunication site. He lives in Dhaka the capital of Bangladesh, a developing country, as he called it.

David Goold A full-time geologist and lunchtime photographer interested in many photographic genres. Scotland. UK-based, his passion lies in street photography.

Carsten Osterwald born in 1965 in Berlin, currently lives in Baden Württemberg. For photography he commutes constantly between Bangkok (Thailand) and Saigon (Vietnam). The trained project manager has been working part-time as a street photographer for over 15 years. Some of his pictures won international competitions, were printed in magazines and were exhibited at the Photokina.

Siddhartha Mukherjee is an avid street photography enthusiast. Originally from India, he got drawn to this style of photography during his bachelors in engineering around a decade ago. He has been constantly experimenting with his street photography style and approach over the years.He uses both digital and analog photography for his work, and greatly enjoys developing and printing in the darkroom. By profession, He is a scientist/engineer, and recently graduated with a PhD in Chemical Engineering from TU Delft, the Netherlands, where he worked on simulating turbulent emulsions

Bekawan Village and surroundings by Bob Matkodak

It was Thursday morning August 22, 2019, I woke up at 6:15 a.m. and glanced at my cellphone, which I always keep near where I sleep.
I had missed two calls. Since I was speaking with my best friend until 3:30 a.m., I really slept well, and didn’t hear anything.

I called my best friend immediately, and asked what was wrong. He told me that a big fire had occurred in the market, starting at about 1:30 a.m. that lasted three hours, until the fire department brought it under control, with help from the community.

By 6:30 a.m., I was on my motorcycle, bound for the ruins of the market – a short drive of 1.5 km. The scene was shocking. I immediately took photos from various angles. The city looked like it that had just been bombed, like the atmosphere of war. There I learned that the stalls and shop houses that burned totaled 485, but fortunately there were no casualties.

My favourite quote of the weekend was from a lady, dressed in her Steampunk garb, talking to a friend, similarly dressed. Seems she’d nipped away from the day’s proceedings to see to her dog. It amused me when I overheard her remark: “I think I’ve discovered how hard it is to walk a dog in a corset”. Hehe. A salutary lesson.
The Steampunk participation starts slowly, so slowly you don’t realise you’re being drawn in to this world.
First the hat and goggles. Then a waistcoat, perhaps.
As I slip down the slope toward embracing Steampunk, I’ll have to make choices. Best not take my dog to an event – or – make sure my costume doesn’t include a corset. Life is never simple. By the way, I don’t have a dog at this stage.

But it was difficult as I say, I had only a half handful of Nepalese words in my vocabulary he not many more in English. Regardless, we became friends even if only by proxy through mutual knowing, some of the others, in this strange, friendly and jovial game of cards. The next morning on my way out of his village we happened upon each other. Instinctively we exchanged words, a Namaste, he added a word to the end of his greeting which translates to ‘old man or father’ and smiled, we shook hands, embraced and parted. I still feel humbled, even now, when I think of that!

What I care about the most when taking a picture is the light and the shape of objects. If there is a characteristic light, I will try to make a work using that light well. For example, light shining between buildings or reflection from the road surface. I always care about the people who come and go at the stations and in the streets. And how people line up and move. I think that a photograph is almost imagined before being actually taken.
